I promise this will be the last entry dedicated to an individual day of classes. This completes my trilogy.
So, after much worry about not having received the e-mail about my Scene Study course, I got it this morning. I'm in! Yay! Class was more or less cancelled, though; the Drama orientation was this morning, and a few of us met at the class before heading over there. Well, rather, I headed over to make sure I didn't have to do anything to register myself in the class, and then _they_ headed to the Drama orientation. I headed to the free pancake breakfast. Mmm. :-) Two blueberry pancakes and one chocolate chip pancake later, I went and prepped for my Wind Ensemble audition. Peter showed up while I was in a practice room and gave me a Coke. I have no idea where he got it. It crossed my mind that he was trying to poison me. Or maybe he just got it at grad student orientation this morning. Either way.
My audition went reasonably well. I played prettily, if I may say so. I mispitched a couple of times on the sightreading, but, hey, I'm the one who decided to play a brass instrument. We have a graduate trumpet player this year. Ashley says she has a masters in trumpet, and is currently working on her doctorate, but she isn't taking lessons with either Russ or Al as far as I know, so I'm not sure what she's doing. Well, she's teaching Aural Skills and auditioning for Wind Ensemble, apparantly. Three cheers for an uncontested section leader.
After my audition, I had two hours of boredom. I so can't wait for stuff to actually start up. I drank the Coke Peter gave me. I guess it wasn't poisoned. Or maybe it's a time release poison, and I'll drop dead later tonight. We'll see. Conducting class was pretty good. We got further in this one class than in a week of the conducting musicianship class I took at Camrose. The presence of Jackie and Beth was much appreciated. There's this older ladie that Jackie knows in the class, though, and she has the unfortunate habit of speaking to everybody like they're a moderately intelligently, slightly obstinant 12-year-old. Penny in my Drama 149 class spoke like that. Then again, she was also the Psychology major who believed that people would lose every ounce of self-control and rational thought the second they inhaled/swallowed/huffed/were in the general vicinity of anybody doing any of that. Some people just make my head hurt.
I had to go home, because I had my mom's car, and I needed to give it back and go with her to pick mine up from the shop. Something was wrong with the starter, and it died on Tuesday. Inconvenient. Thus, I got to Peter's later than I wanted to. Sean, Alyssa and John came over for a going away dinner for Sean. Peter made Bouchon stuff--butternut squash soup, salmon with leeks and beurre blanche, and tarte tatin, which is kind of an apple upsidedown cake. Soooo good. He took the rest over to his mom's, otherwise I would have eaten more. It's relatively simple, though, so maybe I'll get him to make it again. It can be his new lemon tart. Now we're all sitting upstairs with Mario Power Tennis. Despite only having had a small glass of wine and the smallest taste of port (mmmm...) tonight, I feel like I've had a lot to drink. I don't feel drunk, I just feel like I've consumed a lot of alcohol, possibly because I've focused on the stuff I've had. Now I feel guilty. I have no idea why--John's here, so I look bone dry in comparison.
Anyway, now I'm just rambling on while I watch John and Dave play tennis. I love the fact that I can watch and type at the same time. John's losing. Peter's ranting about Phys Ed curriculums. Jo, have you ever had this discussion with him?

I don't have Angela's e-mail adress, but I know she reads this:
Did you download anything while you were on Peter's computer on Monday night? Or was anyone else on the computer Monday night? Internet Explorer is now riddled with evil adware... Dave's gonna wipe the system, I just wanna know what this came with.

Second Day of Classes
Today was... long. Percussion Tech looks is going to be great. Carly's in my class. She showed up and I asked her what she was doing there. Taking the class, she said. Maybe because she's been away at Ed for the last year, or maybe because I just saw her spiffy business cards, or maybe because it was 8am, but for some reason I thought she'd graduated. I sat there thinking very hard about what kind of paperwork you had to do to come back to retake a course after you'd graduated before she reminded me. Class got out early, leaving me with nearly five hours to fill. I will be very glad when Wind Ensemble starts, thus shortening my insanely long break. Well, I say that now...
I went to Southgate during my break to see if Eddie Bauer had that sweater vest I wanted in my size in brown. Nope. So I poked around the mall a bit, looking for a dress to wear to my cousin's wedding that was slightly cheaper than the one I bought at Banana Republic, and then treated myself to Tim Horton's. Mmm, steeped tea. I know steeping it doesn't do that much to make it taste better, and that it's really just a gimmick, but it's so much less hassle to not have to fuss with the teabag. But, anyway, since neither West Ed nor Southgate have the sweatervest I want, I ordered it online. It'll be here in about a week. Muchly looking forward to that.
2:00 finally came. I even practiced some more to pass the time. The whole tone technical exercises in the first Vizutti book are a bitch to read. They adhere to the rule about using sharps when ascending and flats when descending, but they don't correct the accidentals within the same bar before switching from sharps to flats. So suddenly it's a B natural, not a B sharp, but you have only the context of the other 16th notes in that beat to figure that out. Boo.
Anyway, 2:00. My Stagecraft and Design course is indeed in Tory, and in a damned small classroom for the number of people we had there. The class was supposed to be capped at 40, but we had nearly 50 people in there. It's mostly theoretical. It's co-taught by the University's Tech and Design guru, who's a cool old hippy, as well as a 20-something woman with a _strong_ Serbian accent. Seriously, I'm not sure this woman knows what consonants are. She's doing the first and third modules of three, though, so I'll have to get used to it. She asked why people were taking this class if it wasn't required, and I had to tell them that as of this calendar year, this was a requied course for BEd Drama minors, which is technically what I am. I hate that I get the good Music education but the bad Drama one. None of the students in this class were first-years, though, since it has prereqs, so nobody could corroburate (sp?) what I was saying.
Yeah, totally fell asleep in that class. Bad time of day. Still looking forward to having a lecture class, though, and glad that everything's on WebCT, or at least will be. Might even buy the Design book that guru John has his BFADesign students buy. It'll be useful later on, and I can get it at the bookstore. There aren't any other books for this course. In fact, the only other book I have to buy at all, since I have my Conducting and Percussion Tech books from last year when I was planning on taking them, is a copy of Streetcar Named Desire for my Scene Study course, provided I get in. Still waiting on that e-mail. Oh, and I suppose that I had to buy the Vizutti books, but those aren't textbooks, those are trumpet bibles.
Oh, and I also found out that both Beth and Jackie, third years, are going to be in my section of the Conducting class. Very glad to have a couple of people I know and like there.

First Day of Classes
I'm tired and my computer isn't picking up our wireless internet signal, so this'll be a short entry, since my parents insist on keeping the window next to their computer open and it's chilly. First day of classes was alright. I'll find out tomorrow if I get into my Scene Study course. It didn't have the prof it was supposed to, but I like the one we've got. She reminds me of Shelly in a couple of small ways. I got stuck in the bad Conducting class. Both sections are at the same time, and I don't know anybody in my section, except for this BEd flute player who was in my Woodwind Tech class. Here's hoping people other than me got it mixed up which section they're in so that I'll have some friends. Tomorrow I have Percussion Tech at 8am!!!! Yay!!! And then nothing until 2, although Wind Ensemble starts next week. My audition's not until Friday. It feels so weird not having to absolutley scramble for my auditions. I chose my piece weeks ago, I've played it before, I have an excerpt of appropriate length, and I'm more or less certain I'll make the band. I mean, not to be a trumpet player or anything, but, really. My Stagecraft and Design course in is Tory. I'm not sure what to think of that. I was hoping for some hands-on, but maybe the theatres aren't bookable for an entire semestre's worth of classes. No, wait, that doesn't make any sense... In any case, it'll be nice to have a simple lecture class. I don't have any of those this term. I watched with semi-regret as people prepped for their jazz auditions today. I'd love to be able to do it, but that would be essentially a seventh course for the term, since I'm not in Wind Ensemble for credit. Also looking forward to lessons. Bought all three Vizutti books on Tuesday. The technical studies make a nice change from Clarke's, and are actually a lot more fluid. I hate Db major.

John and Co's Drunken Science
This is from maybe a month ago, when a bunch of people were over and somewhat inebriated. Luckily, they didn't get too far down the list, themselves.
10 Phases of Drunkenness: a study in modern behaviours
Low level ‘tipsy’; fake drunk
‘Loving’ feeling OR feelings of rage/depression
‘Grabbiness’ or overtly seeking physical intimacy
Aggressiveness or willingness to engage in combat
Slurring words, with addition of trouble connecting thoughts
Difficulty walking and infantile motor capacity
Nausea
Vomiting
Waking up in a pool of own vomit
Hospitalization or other medical side effects as a result of alcohol poisoning
‘Tipsy’ is defined as an awkward “light”, happy feeling associated with the early stages of excessive consumption of alcohol.
‘Loving’ is defined as the emotional state of being in which an individual expresses feelings of endearment/tenderness. (In most cases these feelings are a return to the earlier stages of Maslow’s Basic Needs pyramid, and also, though unrelated, quite often unwarranted.)
‘Grabbiness’ is defined as the state in which those of the predominantly male sex are prone to “grabbing” body parts of another individual. (This is a continuation of the prior level of drunkenness, wherein the individual relies heavily upon basic needs, ie: food, water, and sexual activity.)
*This list has been compiled with the assistance of my colleagues Johnicus, Pryscilla and Morgasm. I am appreciative of their extensive knowledge, and practical expertise in this area, without which I may never have been able to adequately identify the specific levels of debauchery.
Yours in pretension,
Angela Visscher

Poor Brick Wall...
Mmm, coffee. It's a rainy Sunday afternoon. I spent last night at Peter's but made sure to come home at noon so that my mom and I could go to Ikea to look at the big gushy chair I like that we're considering getting for my new room. This plan has been delayed somewhat by the fact that a family friend is coming over sometime this afternoon to get my dad to sign a form saying he's still alive and therefore continues to qualify for his Dutch pension. But oh, well. As of yesterday, it's uncertain as to whether we're actually moving or not. Well, officially that's the position. Unofficially, we're moving, and if we have to leave my dad behind, so be it. Allow me to explain: Yesterday, my parents, both of them, went to look at a showhome for our new house in a different development. See, my mom was the first person on the list of people to be called when Brass III began accepting deposit cheques. She was not the first person to get there with her cheque, though. So she's second on the list for choosing a lot, and the first person on the list wants two houses. There are only six lots of something like 20 set aside for the floor plan we want (there are three variations of the floor plan, and the one we want is the biggest and most expensive and, thus, has the fewest lots reserved for it). Two of these lots, my dad would love. However, since the person who gets first pick also wants the same floorplan as us, he's convinced that those are the ones they'll take. Of the other four, two don't back onto the lake (with a floating fountain!), and one will be the showhome. My dad doesn't seem to realize that this leaves us with one perfectly good lot. He apparently spent a lot of the time at the showhome yesterday saying "I'm not impressed," and was very rude to the woman working there. So he's not agreeing to moving yet.
*bangs head against brick wall*
My mom says that my dad may just be looking for an excuse, any excuse not to move. I have no idea why. He doesn't have to pack, doesn't have to move the stuff. We're downsizing, so we'll make money off of the move. All he has to do is come home 2.5 km further South than previously. That's where his La-Z-Boy will be, so I doubt he'll mind the slightly longer trip. Maybe he's just a crotchety old Conservative. No, scratch the maybe. He _is_ a crotchety old Conservative. The only thing that's uncertain when it comes to that is whether or not it's the reason he might not want to move.
In other news, Peter and I finally got around to putting World of Warcraft on my computer. I'm playing a Night Elf Druid. I'm not sure that's the class I meant to choose, though. Dave says that 80% of women play Night Elf Hunters. I say that maybe the job at BioWare isn't the best thing for him after all. But it's his 21st birthday today, so I'll be nice. ^_^
Apparently there's sushi tomorrow. Looking forward to it, guys.

Calderon Dreamin'
So I picked my dog up from the groomers this afternoon. He's pretty. ^_^ Anyway, all the way home, he was fine. But the second we pull into the garage, he throws up in my car. *sigh* At least it was easy enough to clean up.
So it's the Friday of the Labour Day long weekend. I'm tempted to pack a bag and head to Calderon Acres. God knows there'd be something for me to do there. Plus, I miss Wayne and Ted. Wayne would have been so proud of me. Joyce took me to her advanced Astanga Yoga class on Wednesday (holy crap!), and there were pictures of Hare Krishna at the front of the room. I still hurt. Down Dog really is a bitch. But, yeah, I haven't seen Wayne since his impromtu move to India and subsequent deportation. Well, kinda. He left before they could deport him, which, I gotta say, was one of Wayne's better decisions. Oooh! And I could meet Ted's fiancee! My mom used to think that Ted was gay because he'd hit 33 or however old he is without showing any real interest in getting married. *breathe in, breathe out*
Wow, it's like the world is setting the stage for us to have a really good weekend. The maids cleaned the house thouroughly two days ago, Rob and co are currently mowing the lawn, my mom's car is fixed after her accident and the new computer arrived two weeks early. Now that all the stresses are gone, all we need is for something fun to happen... ... ... ...hello?
