Uncommon Mondayness

Good evening. It is Monday, and it has been a good day. I had a good lesson, good classes and I woke up feeling rested. I even had time to have breakfast and coffee at home. And I had the most delicious dinner! I took taosted raisin bread, spread mascarpone cheese on it, topped it with apple slices, and sprinkled it with cinnamon. Mmmm... If you get pretentious with your description of it, it fits right on a gourmet appetizer menu, but is cheap, easy and healthy.

Peter is watching Prison Break. His dad walked in and greeted me as the lady of the house. That creeped me out. Oh, well, I suppose I stay over more often than Shelly, the only other woman that stays over. Dave needs to get a girlfriend so that there's someone my age-ish who's in this boat with me. ^_^ The last social outing I heard of Dave going on was to his colleague's house yesterday with a bunch of people to watch DVDs of Firefly, though, so I may have a while to wait. ;-p

I am not a suspense person. I mean, if I know that a movie is going to end with a happy ever after, and that the suspense is just in how they get there, that's fine. But this Prison Break show is just getting to me. I have no idea what kind of timeline they're working with, here, so I'm never sure whether to be worried. Also, the romance subplot with the prison doctor is just insane. I think it was best put in the second episode: "Cute!" "Prisoner!" the latter being spoken by the love interest, the former by I think a nurse. Yet, still, they plough on to the ploughing. Oh, well. New Gilmore Girls and House tomorrow! Yay!

Life? What's a life?

I'm really starting to miss people. I want Jo and Eric to come back, as well as Doug, Kaitlyn, Mandy and Sean. Hell, I even miss not having Pri around. ;-p And Morgan! Just because you guys have jobs and superior educational experiences, you think you can just up and leave. Well, harrumph!

Very little has happened to me in the past couple of days. Maybe I'd have something interesting to blog about if y'all came back. ;-p My mom got back from Winnipeg this morning. She went to see my grandparents. My grandfather is 90, but, despite reduced mobility and type 2 diabetes, is doing alright. My grandmother is about 86 and has three terminal diseases: 1) heart disease, which hasn't killed her yet, so maybe it won't, 2) lung cancer, which we're certain won't get a chance to kill her, because it's just a little baby tumour and she's got 3) Alzeihmers, and it's getting pretty bad. My mom wanted to give my grandfather a break from my grandmother by taking her out shopping and the like, which I thought was a spectacularly stupid idea. Yeah, sure, a woman with Alzheimers would be perfectly happy in a crowded, noisy and unfamilliar palce with a woman she doesn't recognize. Amazingly, it went alright. My grandmother kept asking who my mom was married to and what he did, as well as where her children were, but there weren't any situations that required either an ambulance or the ploice, so I suppose it wasn't all that bad.

Hmm, let's see. I want people to leave me comments, so I'm going to ask you a question that you have to leave a comment to answer, but I'm having trouble thinking of one... Oh! In honour of Jo's birthday, what's the best birthday card you've ever received?

TGIF

Thank God it's Friday. I did Wednesday one better and missed class entirely this morning. I slept in. My alarm went off at 7, but Peter was staying over, so I turned it off quickly so that it wouldn't wake him, but that just let me fall right back asleep. I woke up 15 minutes before my class started, but I figured it just wasn't worth it at that point. I had a busy afternoon, though. Dr. Street made us rehearse today. Chelsea, a second-year who was majoring in euphonium last year, but switched to trumpet this year, wasn't there because she claims to have injured her diaphram, so a new trumpet student who did three years of sociology (I think) at Red Deer Collage subbed in for her, and Katie and I decided we wanted her to permanently replace Chelsea. Have I ranted about Chelsea yet? She bothers me...

I was starving during rehearsal, so, on my way home I stopped at Sunterra and bought nice, fresh food. Greek salad, French bread, bruschetta... God, yes. Thus, I am having a good evening. Yay good evening!

I have decided that my Stagecraft and Design course is a total gong show. Yesterday, we covered Medieval thratre through to 19th century theatre. She finished early again, and didn't want to let us go so early, so she gave us a ten minute break so she could go over her notes for stuff to elaborate on, and when class resumed, she had to correct stuff she'd said before. I mean, really, if you're only going to hit the absolute most important aspects of each era, you could at least get them right. I spent the class writing out my warm-up routine for Russ. I felt very accomplished and professional. ^_^ But it kind of missed the point, because I forgot the package of warm-up activities Russ gave me in lesson to spend this week trying out and incorporating. Oh, well.

I think I'm gonna go get some more of that French bread. Mmmm...

Life, the Universe and Everything

Sitting around half-watching CSI. It's kind of crept into my viewing over the summer, since it's _always_ on. I miss the time when X-Files was like that. Poor X-Files...

Today was fire drill day. It cut my Scene Study class short, but I didn't mind. Groat Road southbound was closed, so people detoured to Whitemud, Fox Drive and Belgravia Road, which, combined with the fact that they're doing construction on Belgravia, made traffic horrible. I was also running very low on gas, and was really worried that I would run out in the middle of the bottleneck. After sitting in traffic with my car in neutral for far too long, I arrived, 15 minutes late for class, very frustrated and exhausted. Class was alright at first, but I wound up doodling on my jeans as I felt my coffee wear off, and by the time the fire alarm went off, I was ready to pout my way back to bed.

The rest of the day was alright--I rode a Venti until finally being able to take a nap. I'm currently waiting for Peter to get home from his night class, which should be soon. Then we're going go party 'til the wee hours of whenever I need to go to bed to be well-rested for my 8am class tomorrow. Par-tay!

I can play the drums!!! Well, I can hit a practice pad properly with snare sticks. I've spent the past 9 years having absolutely no idea how to do that, and this morning I learned how. It was totally worth being in class at 8am, even though I only got 5 hours of sleep.

In other news, the first module of my Stagecraft and Design course is history of the theatre. We covered all of ancient Greece and Romans in 35 minutes today. The whole class was dead silent, some taking notes, some not. Now, I've mentioned that this woman has a very strong Serbian accent, have I not? So her English is hard enough to understand, let alone her Greek. When she finished her lecture, she asked if anybody had any questions. Nobody said anything, so she recapped what she'd taught. Then she asked again if anybody had any questions. A couple of people timidly raised their hands. This opened the flood gates. Most of the students in this course are second-year drama majors. This means that the Theatre History courses that teach this stuff in detail are just starting up for them. I took those courses last year, so this stuff was all basic review to me, but good lord was the rest of the class confused. At least five people asked the difference between the Greek and Roman Orchestra, which is one of the simplest and most obvious differences between the two types of theatres. Nobody could spell Skene. The fact that the Romans used stairs seemed to absolutely baffle some people. At least they knew who Dionysus was, although the concept of the Festival of Dionysus was kinda not really emphasized. This is going to be a difficult module to sit through...

Also--and this really made me rub my forehead--the prof put the syllabus on WebCT, but most students still can't access it. After nearly a week of fielding complaints about this, does she just print off copies of the syllabus? No, she prints off copies of the help website for WebCT, with links that go to pages explaining things like your CNS login ID. I wrote IQ Reqs beside each link on my copy. I estimate that, in order to log onto WebCT, you need an IQ of 7.

Wind Ensemble started today. I had a tacet for most of the stuff we rehearsed, because I have a backstage solo part. It was ex-cite-ing. One thing made it a bit better, though: halfway through rehearsal, I noticed that Katie was wearing a Suicide Girls hoodie. Loved that. ^_^

Season premier of Gilmore Girls and House are on tonight!!!!! They're at the same time, though, so I'm gonna tape House because a) it's not on digital cable, and I can therefore tape it from my television, and b) Peter wants to see it, and has charged me with taping it every week, as he's in class Tuesday nights. Apparently LL Cool J is guesting on House as a sick Death Row inmate. Huh. House was talking to Cameron about being damaged in the promo I saw, and I'm totally a sucker for that. ^_^ And I want to see Luke's answer to Lorelai's proposal on GG! I'm pretty sure it's a yes, but I've curbed my spoiler-whore ways for the summer, and, besides, it's the _how_ that makes it worth watching. Still, *squee*!

Shivering Heap

South Lab not heated. Two Hour Class. Twelve degrees celcius. Not a good start to a Monday morning.

That class, Scene Study, uses excerpts from a book called Backwards and Forwards. It's a neat book, talking about how action works. It uses the terms Triggers and Heaps. The prof didn't explain this to the class, but from previous experience I know that the story behind those terms is that when I pull the trigger of a gun pointed at you, you fall to the floor in a heap. Kind of funny. But it doesn't distinguish between staus quo and conflict. That bothers me. Events, actions and beats, kinda like notes, harmonies and phrases, are useful things, but don't express a lot. The thing that bugs me most, though, is that a great deal of conflict occurs when the triggers and heaps rule goes wrong. The intended heap isn't achieved, either because nothing happens or because something else happens. I'm trying to find a way to incorporate both concepts into a nice, balanced, inclusive concept. So far I'm not having any luck, possibly because I had crispy chicken curry for lunch and now have unpleasant heartburn. Boo unpleasant heartburn.

Generic Disclaimer

I'd like to watch Animation Domination, which is really just the Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad with a horrible name, but Dave wants to watch Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares or Disasters or whatever it is, because they had a generic disclaimer before it saying there might be coarse language and nudity. I admit, I would like to see how nudity would come into play in a food network show, and Gordon Ramsay is indeed the man, but it's season premier night. Ah, Peter has hunoured me. Dave's playing World of Warcraft, so he doesn't have much time to spare to watch, anyway. We're still watching the food network show during commercials, and, I gotta say, Gordon Ramsay is showing a remarkable amount of restraint. He's interviewing and auditioning this chef, and he's whatever you call a male ditz. Oh, there we go, Ramsay's dishing it out. Excellent.

Spent a lot of the weekend playing World of Warcraft. Made myself an Undead Mage character to play solo. Lessons and Rep class start tomorrow. Three cheers for something to do. Oh, crap, I should have bought stuff for my classes. I need a baton, drum sticks and a copy of A Streetcar Named Desire. That'll be the primary text we work with in Scene Study. Looking forward to that.

Oh, hey, there's a 26-year-old guy trying out for the Head Chef job on the Ramsay show. Maybe he'll be bringing the nudity. As long as it's not the guy who owns the restaurant. OMG!!! It was!!!!!!! He did a striptease while singing karaoke to "I'm Too Sexy." He was wearing black bikini briefs. It was disturbing. I don't think Dave even noticed...
